Irony
Two news caught my attention today: The death of Nelson Mandela and the freedom of Tony Leviste.
The freedom of Tony Leviste. On 2009, Leviste was convicted of
homicide in the killing of Rafael de las Alas. Levisted had admitted responsibility
for de las Alas' death, claiming he only shot the victim in
self-defense. The Makati City Regional Trial Court sentenced him to 6 to
12 years in prison. After serving six years behind bars, he received
pardon and now a free man.
Nelson Mandela is a prominent figure
fighting apartheid in South Africa. Aparteid is a system of social
segregation under which the rights of black is curtailed. The government
segregated education, medical care, beaches, and other public services,
and provided black people with services inferior to those of white
people.
Mandela fought apartheid and because of this he is
jailed. He became a president and dismantles apartheid and made some
reforms to combat poverty. He is such a great statesman that he declined
to run again for a second term.
Leviste and Mandela. Both
were imprisoned. Mandela because of fighting for the black people,
Leviste for killing a person! Mandela was behind bars for 27 years,
Leviste for six years!
