Career or Family?

What will you choose? Career or family?

I know a dozen of people who chose the path of career. They are successful in the field they chose. Some of them are wealthy and some are in the high society. But successful as they are, their family suffered. Some ended with their family broken. Others ended aging alone. There are also those who are respected by the society but not with his or her family.

I also know some people who choose to be with the family. They sacrifice the good offer of big companies to work in a far place to be with the family. They opted to be close to family instead of accepting working in a greener pastures. They opted not to extend working extra hours just to be home and watch their children grow up.

Career or family? Well, we can always rationalize that one is working hard, going to unfamiliar places, putting extra time in the career because that is also for the family…for the children who will grow up…to have a good future…But is it? Or might it be for the self-satisfaction in being successful?

The same is also the dilemma of superheroes. In Ironman 3, ironman’s wife is put in great danger brought by the antagonist’s wish to kill the hero. In Spiderman 1, Parker choose not to pursue the relationship with MJ because he knows that those who are angry with Spiderman will harm those whom he loves for it will bring Spiderman into a greater pain if the one he loves will be in harm’s way. And finally in the telenovela Juan de La Cruz, Juan is careful not to expose his real identity, hiding it even to Rosario, for Juan does not want her to be harm once the Aswangs know that Juan is the Tagabantay.

So, career or family? Pick one!

But hey…Why the heck do I write about these things? Perhaps, epekto nang kapapanood nang mga superheroes...

Perhaps I have to go back to the thing I do best, i.e. to sleep…
